Free AI therapy: what $0 actually gets you

sokoon's free plan is one session a day, forever. No credit card, no seven day countdown. You get an AI character matched to you, exercises after each session, the Mood Radar, and the Mind Map. Voice and unlimited sessions cost money. We are telling you before you sign up, not after.

Takes an email. Never takes a card.

What does free usually mean in this category?

Free trial. Almost always. You get three messages, or seven days, and the wall arrives at the exact moment you were finally getting to the real thing. Then you are sitting there with your card out, mid sentence, deciding whether the feeling you were about to describe is worth $19.99.

For a mental health product that design is worse than annoying. It puts a price gate on the one moment the tool existed for. So we built the free plan to reset every day and never expire. You are not on a countdown here.

What do you actually get for $0?

The whole thing, laid out. The paid plans sit next to it so you can see exactly where the line falls rather than discovering it later. The Mind Map and the Mood Radar come with every plan, including the free one.

Built on 0+ clinician-reviewed supportive dialogues

Your own conversations are never used for training.

Do I have to make an account?

Yes, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. sokoon remembers you between sessions, which means Thursday builds on Tuesday instead of starting from nothing, and there is nowhere to keep that memory without an account. An email address is all it takes. No card, at any point, on the free plan.

If handing over an email is more than you want to do tonight, that is a fair call. A crisis line or a friend costs nothing and asks for less.

Your messages are encrypted

What you say here stays here. Encrypted, never sold, and never used to train anything.

Is it safe to tell an AI your personal problems?

That depends on which AI, and the honest answer is that some of them are careless with you. The things worth checking before you type anything real: whether it is encrypted, whether the company sells data, whether your conversations get used as training material, and what happens if you say you are not okay.

For sokoon: conversations are encrypted, we do not sell data, and your words never train anyone's model. If a conversation reaches crisis, it stops being clever and points you to human help. This matters more with general purpose chatbots than people assume, which we get into in using ChatGPT for mental health.

What our users are saying

r/therapyGPT

I loved sokoon too, played with it yesterday quite a bit, and I liked it.

— eesti*****

I didn't realize how much I was carrying until I started letting it out.

— Sarah

I put it off for months. I wish I hadn't.

— Joe

I was skeptical. Three days in, I cried — because I finally felt something shift.

— Layan

It was good to have a place to vent. I have been doing a therapy but sokoon was available 24/7 and it felt more tailored for the therapy than just venting to ChatGPT.

Is free AI therapy actually therapy?

No, and anything advertising itself that way has already told you something about how it handles the truth. A therapist is a licensed human who can diagnose you, build a treatment plan, and be held accountable by a licensing board. Illinois passed a law in 2025 prohibiting the sale of therapy services through AI, with fines up to $10,000 per violation, and more states are following.

What the evidence does support is narrower and still worth having. The first randomized controlled trial of a generative AI mental health chatbot, run by Dartmouth and published in NEJM AI in 2025, found an average 51% reduction in depression symptoms over four weeks and 31% for generalized anxiety. The tool in that trial was purpose built for mental health and clinician monitored. That is the standard worth demanding. The longer version is in is AI therapy real therapy, and if you are comparing options, our honest ranking lists our own weaknesses next to everyone else's.

sokoon is for adults 18 and over. If you are in crisis, contact a crisis line now. In the US, call or text 988. If what you are carrying is bending your daily life out of shape, you want a licensed human, and affording counseling lists routes to real care from free to $30 a session.

Common questions

Is there a genuinely free AI therapist?

There is no AI therapist at any price, because a therapist is a licensed human and software cannot hold a license. There are AI mental health apps with genuinely free plans, and sokoon is one of them. The free plan gives you one free session every day with no card and no expiry date. Be careful with apps that advertise free and mean free trial, which is most of them.

What is the catch with sokoon's free plan?

One free session per day rather than unlimited, one AI character instead of all of them, and no voice sessions. Those sit on the paid plans at $6.99 and $14.99 a month. Everything else comes with the free plan, including the Mind Map and the Mood Radar. The free plan does not expire, downgrade after a week, or ask for a card at any point.

Do I need a credit card to use sokoon for free?

No. The free plan never asks for payment details. You create an account with an email address, and that is the only thing required to start a session.

Can I use voice sessions on the free plan?

No. Voice is on the Premium plan at $14.99 a month. The free plan is text only. We would rather say that here than let you find out after you have signed up hoping to talk out loud.

Is it safe to tell an AI your personal problems?

It depends entirely on the app. The questions worth asking: is it encrypted, does it sell data, does it train its models on what you say, and does it hand you to human help in a crisis. sokoon encrypts your conversations, never sells your data, and never trains on your words. No AI tool, including this one, is safe to use as a crisis service.

What happens when I use up my free session for the day?

The session ends and a new one opens the next day. Nothing you said disappears. Your next session picks up with the context of the last one, and the Mind Map keeps building across all of them. If waiting is not workable for you, unlimited text sessions are $6.99 a month.
