What people mean when they search for an AI therapist

Nobody types "AI therapist" because they care about product categories. You type it because something is heavy tonight and the human options all have obstacles in front of them: therapy costs more than you can spend, the waitlist is months long, or the thing you need to say is not ready for a human audience yet. What you are really looking for is a conversation that is available anytime, private, and actually helpful.

That thing exists, and the honest version of it is worth having. But the label matters more than it seems, and here is why.

Which kind of support fits what you need?

“AI therapist” combines three different options. Compare the job each one can honestly do before deciding where to share something personal.

There is no such thing as an AI therapist

A therapist is not someone who talks with you about feelings. A therapist is a licensed professional who can assess and diagnose you, build a treatment plan, coordinate with doctors, and be held accountable by a licensing board if they harm you. Every part of that depends on being a human with credentials and legal responsibility. Software has none of it, no matter how warm the conversation feels.

The distinction is practical: AI cannot hold a therapy license or assume a clinician's legal responsibilities. Marketing an app as a therapist can blur the moment when a person needs licensed care. We wrote the longer version in our complete guide to AI therapy.

Why should you care about a labeling issue? Because the label predicts behavior. An app that inflates its title tends to inflate everything: what it can handle, how it responds in heavy moments, what happens to your data. The moment of truth for any mental health tool is the conversation where you are not okay, and you want the tool that spent its honesty budget on that moment rather than on its marketing.

What sokoon is instead

sokoon is AI built for mental health support. It remembers context between sessions so Thursday can build on Tuesday instead of starting from zero. Mood tracking, exercises, and a guided journal sit alongside the conversations.

Free includes one full text session every day, with no card and no expiry. Basic includes unlimited text and no voice. Premium includes unlimited text and voice. sokoon is for adults 18 and over; it does not diagnose, treat, or provide crisis care.

What sokoon can substantiate

  • Conversations are encrypted.
  • Your data is not sold.
  • Your conversations are not used to train sokoon's AI.
  • sokoon works in a browser and does not require an app-store download.

Talking to an AI online, by text or by voice

Most people picture typing into a chat window, and for most people that is right. Text is private in a full room, easier when you are crying, and easier when the thing you need to say sounds worse out loud. On sokoon, text is where the free plan lives: one full session every day, no card.

Some things do not fit in typed sentences, though. If you process by talking, sokoon's Premium plan does voice sessions with the same character who knows your history, so you can pace the room and say it badly and start over, the way you would with a person. Neither mode requires an app store download or a waitlist. You open it in a browser, and the conversation is there.

Category evidence—not a sokoon outcome claim

What research on purpose-built AI support suggests

A 2025 randomized controlled trial evaluated Therabot, not sokoon. The study enrolled 210 adults with diagnosed depression or anxiety, or at clinically high risk for an eating disorder; 106 received four weeks of Therabot access. Researchers reported average symptom reductions of 51% for depression and 31% for anxiety in the Therabot group.

This supports the category's potential, not a claim that sokoon produces the same result. Therabot was purpose-built over several years, conversations were reviewed during the study, and the researchers cautioned that generative AI is not ready to operate autonomously across high-risk mental health situations.

How to judge any app on that search results page

Including ours. Open the app you are considering and check four things before you tell it anything real:

  • Does it claim to be a therapist? If yes, it has already told you how it handles the truth.
  • What happens in a crisis? Mention that you are struggling and see whether it points you to human crisis resources or just keeps chatting. The second behavior is disqualifying.
  • Where do your words go? Look for encryption, no data selling, and a promise that conversations never train models. If the privacy policy is vague, the answer is unfavorable.
  • Is there structure behind the warmth? Evidence-based frameworks like CBT and DBT, ideally with clinical review behind them, are the difference between support and pleasant noise.

When you need the real thing

If you are in crisis, contact a crisis line now. In the US, call or text 988. If you suspect a condition that has a name, or what you are carrying is bending your daily life out of shape, you want a licensed human, and cost does not have to be the dealbreaker it looks like: our guide to affording counseling lists routes to real care from free to $30 a session. AI support is the layer for everything before, between, and around that care, and it is a good layer. It is just not the license.

Common questions

Is there a free AI therapist?

There is no licensed AI therapist because software cannot hold a therapy license. There are AI mental health apps with free plans. sokoon includes one full text session every day on Free, with no card and no expiry.

Is an AI therapist safe to use?

Safety depends on the product, its privacy controls, and whether it is honest about its limits. sokoon encrypts conversations, does not sell your data, and does not use your conversations to train its AI. No AI tool, including sokoon, is a crisis service.

Can an AI therapist replace a real therapist?

No. A licensed therapist can diagnose, build a treatment plan, and carry legal responsibility for your care. AI support works on a different layer: the everyday processing, skill practice, and hard-to-say-out-loud moments between sessions, or before you can access care at all.

Why does sokoon not call itself an AI therapist?

Because a therapist is a licensed human and sokoon is software. sokoon is AI mental health support informed by established approaches such as CBT and DBT. It does not diagnose, treat, or replace a licensed professional.

Does talking to an AI about your problems actually help?

A 2025 randomized trial reported encouraging results for Therabot, a purpose-built and clinician-monitored research system. That study did not evaluate sokoon, so it supports the category’s potential rather than a claim about sokoon’s outcomes.

What should I pick instead of an AI therapist?

Choose a licensed professional when you need diagnosis or treatment. If you want private, everyday support for reflection and skill practice, an honest AI mental health app may fit. sokoon starts with one free text session daily; voice is available only on Premium.
