Prep for your next therapy session
Five questions, a few minutes, and a short list you can bring in. Nothing here is saved, sent, or recorded, so copy what you want before you close the tab.
Question 1 of 5
It does not have to be dramatic. The small ones that will not leave are often the useful ones.
Skipping one is fine. A blank answer just stays off the list.
Why the week disappears by the time you get there
Therapy is one hour. The other hundred and sixty-seven are where the material actually happens, and most of it is gone by the next appointment. Not repressed, just ordinary forgetting. The argument on Tuesday that felt enormous has been flattened by Thursday into fine, and you open the session with a summary of a week you can no longer really see.
Writing something down close to when it happened is the whole fix. You are not building a case or keeping a record for anyone. You are giving your next hour a starting point that is not so, how was your week.
The question people skip
The second one. Almost everyone withholds something from a therapist at some point, and the reasons are usually ordinary rather than dramatic: shame, not wanting to spend the hour on it, protecting the therapist from something, or simply not having the words yet. Naming it here, privately, is a much smaller step than saying it out loud, and it tends to make the out-loud version possible. There is more on that in is it bad to lie to your therapist.
Common questions
What should I bring to a therapy session?
One moment you are still thinking about, anything you avoided saying last time, what happened with the homework, and the single thing you most want the hour spent on. Written down beats remembered, because the week edits your memory of it.
Is it strange to prepare for therapy?
No. Most therapists would rather you arrive with something specific than spend the first fifteen minutes reconstructing your week. Preparing is not performing, and you are still allowed to change direction once you are in the room.
Are my notes saved anywhere?
No. Nothing you type here is stored, sent, or recorded. It lives in this browser tab and disappears when you close it, so copy anything you want to keep before you leave.
What if I have nothing to say this week?
That is worth bringing too. A flat week, a week you cannot remember, or a week where nothing felt like enough to mention is information about what is going on, not a reason to skip.
